OK, after watching a few bouts and saying to myself (and anyone around me), “that looks like loads of fun!” I decided to head out for the Fresh Meat practice held by my local derby team, the Little City Roller Girls. Now, let me first say that I have not skated since I was probably ten. In those days, my skating prowess consisted of strapping some metal adjustable skates to my sneakers, going fast, and slamming into parked cars. I have never been accused of being athletic or graceful. So, why did I decide to suddenly take up roller derby, you ask? I just happen to have the answer right here, in my pocket.
FEAR, yep, fear is a great motivator. Roller derby scares the living hell out of me. Sometimes, I feel like you need to do something that scares the living hell out of you just to make sure you are still alive. So far my experiences have been this:
- it is HARDER than it looks–currently my skating level is approximately that of an 80 year old woman with a walker. However, I was better the 2nd night of practice than the 1st and I intend to improve.
- The LCRG are a great group of women and they have been very helpful, encouraging, and inspiring. They also have a great Fresh Meat coach.
- I am looking forward to the next time I can put on skates, even though I know I wont be the best and it will probably hurt.
